Its best known sights are the moated red brick castle of Schloss Herten, dating back to the 14th century, and the "altes Dorf Westerholt" (Westerholt old village) with its many historic half-timbered houses.
The Herten Friendship Club was formed in February 1989 along with the Herten equivalent the Freundeskreis Doncaster and the friendship has flourished ever since with annual meetings of members of the two societies.
When the club was first formed a street in Herten was called Doncaster Platz and the RAF transported one of our old telephone kiosks to Herten to take pride of place in the town centre.
Members visit Herten or other parts of Germany every two years, always meeting up with members of our twin organisation in Herten, the Freundeskreis Doncaster who always given us a warm welcome. On alternate years the Freundeskreis members visit Doncaster or other areas. The exchange visits help us to gain an impression of each others culture, history, customs and landscape.
On the previous visit to Herten in 2013 the programme included a theatre visit, a tour of the town led by the Mayor (in English), a visit to a mining museum and a trip up to the top of an old gasometer which had a full scale hot air type balloon inside!
In England our visitors from Germany have experienced such things as a fish and chip supper, a trip on an old tram at Crich Museum in Derbyshire, a walk round the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and a visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park which was a top favourite.
