Another very pleasant and enjoyable meeting, with various seasonal German delicacies made by Monika.
Peter and Monika spoke about their visit with Roy and Heather to Herten for the 35th anniversary celebrations of the twinning and the various activities that took place. They then told us about their recent coach trip to Christmas markets in Germany. This was followed by some quiz questions around the theme of Christmas - again provided by Peter and Monika - which provided the stimulus for a lot of discussion.
We also managed to hear a couple of German Christmas carols from the internet.
Members were reminded that there will not be a meeting in January but the Sprachcafe will still take place on Tuesday 14th January 2025.
The next society meeting will be on Friday 14th February 2025, with a presentation by Kirstin on the Krupp family.

For the AGM Peter outlined the various events that had taken place throughout the past year (as listed in this section) and Andrew presented the accounts. Although these show a very small debit balance over the year the account is still in credit and
Andrew proposed that the annual membership subscription remain at £20. This proposal was agreed by all present. All present paid their membership fees to Andrew. Those who were not in attendance are asked to pay their fees as soon as possible as these are now our only source of income. (We no longer have fundraising activities such as the Oktoberfest and the Christmas celebration to increase our funds.) Andrew also informed us that the bank has now changed the account and this will have a fee and charges for transactions.
The membership of the committee and specific roles (as listed in the section under the heading 'Contacts') were also approved.
Thanks were expressed to Andrew for his work as treasurer, to Richenda for her work arranging speakers, to Mike for organising technology when required and also to Peter for his continued efforts as Chair.

Another very informative and well-delivered presentation by Janet on her recent travel around the wonderful country of Uzbekistan with beautiful pictures of the towns of Bukhara, Khiva and Samarkand and interesting details about the food, the buildings and the history. As always when Janet is speaking, our numbers were swelled by the attendance of several of her friends. Thank you very much again, Janet!
After the presentation members took the opportunity to talk with Janet about her experience over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits, kindly provided by Peter, Monika and Richenda.

We are very grateful to Bronwen of the Huddersfield society for providing us with an excellent quiz on Austria containing a variety of questions of differing levels of difficulty, which (as the answers were given) provoked a lot of discussion. Well done to the joint winners, Rachel and Andrew, with an impressive score of 28 out of 30!

A very enjoyable get-together with a look at videos of some of the German dances on which we modelled our 'Tanzabend' in April 2010 as well as photographs of that evening. We then had a lot of fun discussing the answers to some joke questions from a German quiz!

We are very grateful to Jeremy for his excellent and very enjoyable talk on Christabel Bielenberg and her life and experiences as an Englishwoman in Nazi Germany, as told in her book 'The Past is Myself'. This prompted a lot of discussion.

Members present then made contributions to the Ukrainian Centre to help towards the purchase of a Medivac Quad.

Thank you very much to Phil, Alan and Karin for making the long trip to deliver a very interesting presentation on the remarkable 50 year history of the link between Barnsley and their German twin town of Schwaebisch Gmuend and the subsequent formation of the thriving Barnsley Schwaebisch Gmuend Twin Town Society and various associated activities.
There was much discussion and a number of questions throughout the talk, in particular relating to the similarities between their experience and our own.
As always the refreshments (provided by Peter, Monika, Richenda and Andrew) were also greatly appreciated.

A very enjoyable well-attended evening with a presentation by Janet and her colleague Clare from the PAC-UK adoption and permanency support agency, detailing the work they do to help adopted people find and contact their birth relatives whilst offering ongoing support. This provoked a lot of discussion and questions, including personal stories.We are very grateful to both Clare and Janet for agreeing to talk to us about this extremely interesting subject. Thank you also to Peter and Monika for again providing tea and coffee.

We are extremely grateful to Judith and Kirstin for making the long journey to Doncaster from Guiseley for Judith to show us the thought-provoking film documenting her mother's enforced move to England at the age of only 15 and the fate of her family members who remained in Germany.
This was followed by a question and answer session which prompted much discussion.
Throughout the evening members were treated to a variety of Christmas snacks, non-alcoholic Gluehwein and coffee, thanks to Peter, Monika and Andrew.
Members were reminded that:
The Ukrainian Centre will be holding a Christmas Xtravaganza on Friday 15th December, starting at 7pm;
The Sprachcafe will take place as scheduled on Tuesday 12th December 2023 and Tuesday 9th January 2024;
There will be no society meeting in January; and

Her very interesting and informative presentation on this occasion was on the eccentric artist and architect, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who had a very quirky and colourful style.
Marilyn spoke enthusiastically about his life and work and showed us many examples of his artwork and buildings he had designed in many countries around the world. It is amazing that some of the structures were ever built, considering the complexities and unusual nature of the design.
There was much discussion afterwards about the remarkable work of this very talented man.

We were very pleased to once again welcome Kirstin Charlesworth to talk to us.
The talk this Friday was titled
“KITTY WILKINSON - DIE ERSTE OEFFENTLICHE WASCHEREI IN GROSSBRITANNIEN”
“Kitty Wilkinson – The first public laundry in Great Britain"
Kitty Wilkinson was a very kind formidable lady who was way ahead of her time.
She did a lot for the poor, especially children, but her development of places for people to
wash their clothes and later wash houses to wash themselves was what she became well
known for. She managed to convince the authorities in Liverpool to bring piped water and lay
piped drainage. These services and new plumbing systems brought cleanliness and clean
drinking water to the impoverished areas of Liverpool and probably saved thousands of lives.
She is held in such high esteem that she is the first female to have a statue erected in St.
Georges Hall in Liverpool
This was a really interesting talk given by Kirstin with her normal enthusiasm and detail
which we have got to know from her. There was a good question and answer period
afterwards and general chat to finish the evening off.

It was pleasing to have so many of Janet's friends (visitors are always welcome to our meetings!) in attendance for her very informative presentation on her recent visit to Sarajevo with the excellent photographs she took whilst there. The talk included many interesting facts about the history of the region as well as the current situation.

Thank you very much to Roy and John, who both stepped in at the last minute to deliver very interesting and informative talks about some of their own links with and experiences of different areas of Germany.
Roy spoke of a tour he made with Heather in their caravan, providing us with pictures and some very interesting facts about many small villages and towns they stayed in or passed through.
John talked about his time in the military in and around Hanover, which he considers to be his second home, as well as visits he made to the former GDR and the North-East, including the Isle of Ruegen.
We were pleased to welcome two new visitors - Avalyn and Lyn - to this meeting. We hope that they enjoyed our company and will come again!

We are now looking forward very much to the television series 'The Gallows Pole' based on this story.
We are very grateful to Kirstin for again making the long journey to present to us.

A very interesting evening looking through and trying to decipher various documents, postcards and stamps brought in by Bruce, who has a particular interest in Zeppelin postage items. There was a lot of discussion, including about the building site of the R100 airship in Howden.

The Ukrainian Christmas extravaganza was very well attended and enjoyed very much by all present. The evening began with the Ukelele players performing a variety of Christmas music. This was followed by the outstanding group of Ukrainian singers from Stockport. After their first set a group of our members with a few invited guests, who very kindly joined us at the last minute, treated the audience to an almost seamless performance of Cinderella. The Ukrainian singers then took to the stage again, accompanied for some numbers by members of the local Ukrainian community. Thank you very much to Richenda for her efforts in preparing for the Tombola and then spending the evening selling tickets for it.

Another excellent evening thanks to the extremely informative and interesting presentation on South Korea given by Max and Sheana, to whom we are very grateful for making the long journey to see us.
The presentation was very much based on their own personal experience of the country from their numerous trips and family connection and gave us a clear insight into what the country is like and what it is like to live there. Sheana even wore a beautiful traditional dress for the evening.

Another very enjoyable and well-attended evening.
We are very grateful to Kirstin for making the long trip from Halifax to come and talk to us and for delivering her extremely clear, well-researched, interesting and informative presentation on 'Die Motte und der Berg' - the story of Maurice Wilson's determined endeavours to overcome enormous barriers and fulfill hs dream of conquering Mount Everest.
Fortunately the technology worked well and we were also able to welcome visitors on 'Zoom'.
We hope that we are able to persuade Kirstin to talk with us again in the future.

A very pleasant evening socialising and watching video clips relating to Fasching/Karneval celebrations in various parts of Germany, whilst enjoying waffles with hot cherries and whipped cream.

Happy New Year to all members and friends!
A small (but select) group were in attendance for the first meeting of the new year for a talk on Schwaben (Swabia), including information about the town of Schwaebisch Hall, the location of Schwaben, famous Swabians (including Pfizer, an important name in the news recently!), the Swabian dialect, character and food and drink specialities.
The quiz on the translation of Swabian words went down so well we had two extra goes at it - unfortunately with no noticeable improvement!

Our Christmas celebration took place with a small group gathered in the Ukrainian Centre, joined from 7.30pm until 8pm by two members on 'Zoom', as well as Guenter, one of our good friends from Herten. Whilst partaking of mulled wine (non-alcoholic) and various German snacks (Lebkuchen, Stollen, etc) members individually exchanged Christmas greetings with Guenter, who asked us to pass on to all members his wishes for a merry Christmas and happy and healthy New Year.
Peter then led a very interesting and testing quiz with 21 Christmas related questions, which was won by Rachel.
The evening finished with a variety of German Christmas songs.

The Annual General Meeting of the society was attended by 12 members in person and 2 more on 'Zoom'. After apologies were presented on behalf of 4 members, Peter detailed the events of the last two years. He gave information relating to the use of the Ukrainian Centre, including the new charging system (which worked to our benefit), the refurbishment and the new Wi-fi. There was then some discussion about future events.
Andrew presented the unaudited accounts, which this year again show a small surplus over the year. He proposed that the annual subscription should remain at £20. This was agreed unanimously. It was also agreed to pay the subscription to 'Zoom' for at least one more year, as this made it easier to hold committee meetings, for members who couldn't attend in person including our friends from Herten to be involved in all meetings and for speakers to present to us without the need to travel long distances.
Peter then thanked all members of the committee for the individual roles they had played over the past year and in turn those present expressed their gratitude to him for his efforts. Peter C has decided to retire from his role as a member of the committee. It was agreed to leave his position vacant for the time being.
Members then had the opportunity to socialise and the meeting finished with an enjoyable quiz on Germany arranged by Peter and Monika.

It was good to be able to just simply sit and talk about everything that has happened over the past 18 months or so since we were last here.

This meeting started with a minute's silence to commemorate the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
We were very pleased to welcome back Marilyn Heron from the Wharfedale German Circle, who again gave a very interesting and informative presentation - this time on memorials in Berlin - which was enjoyed very much by all present.
It was very good to again see and hear from some of our Herten friends, Willi, Heinrich and Brigitte and Klaus and Ingrid and we hope to see them and others at future meetings and Sprachcafes.

At last we were able to meet again, albeit 'virtually', after 11 months. This was a well-attended meeting considering the circumstances and was very successful, although we did miss the waffles, cherries and cream, which we usually enjoy at this time of year!
It was so good to see and catch up with so many old friends again and we are very grateful to Peter for his excellent, very well researched, interesting and informative illustrated presentation on the Odenwald Bergstrasse and its royal connections.

We are again very grateful to Mark Green, Honorary German Consul, for making his third visit to us - making the lengthy journey from Leeds - to provide us with a very informative, entertaining and humorous insight into the exploits of the early nineteenth century Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, who in spite of only living for 32 years led a very full life and amongst much else is credited with rediscovering the ancient city of Petra in Jordan.
In spite of concerns about the COVID-19 virus the evening was well-attended and all present enjoyed the talk, not only because of the content, but also because of the excellent manner in which it was delivered. We hope very much that Mark will visit us again in the not too distant future!

Another very entertaining Christmas extravaganza with fantastic performances from various groups who make use of the excellent facilities in the Ukrainian Centre.
Before the start of the entertainment visitors were treated to a variety of food typical of Germany and Ukraine (Thank you very much to society members who helped with this, especially to Peter and Monika for making the soup and cakes, to Andrew and Rachel for purchasing other items and to Peter and Janet for doing the cooking.)
The entertainment began with Christmas songs performed by the Ukelele group. This was followed by the wonderful singing of Ukrainian Christmas songs by Mirage, a group of Ukrainian singers who had travelled all the way from Stockport to perform. They were then joined by other members of the Doncaster Ukrainian community for their final selection.
Next it was the turn of various members of the DHGS, with the very able assistance of our guest, James (who played the part of the wolf), to perform our short sketch in German with immediate translation into English throughout (this year it was Red Riding Hood) . For the first time in a number of years this was delivered perfectly - an amazing achievement considering that nobody knew of the part they were playing until earlier in the evening and had had no time at all to rehearse. Mirage then reappeared in a different guise with another first-class musical number. After this there was a short interval with the opportunity to participate in the tombola and purchase more raffle tickets. (We are very grateful to Richenda for all of her hard work acquiring and marking up the many prizes.)
To finish the evening we were treated to a number of Christmas songs, ably performed by the very talented Gastrick Band.

At the society AGM Peter outlined the activities of the past year and the events planned for the coming year. He proposed that we also consider occasional additional get-togethers for planned walks around the area.
Andrew presented the unaudited accounts, which this year show a small surplus over the year. He proposed that the annual subscription should remain at £20. This was agreed unanimously.
Peter then thanked all members of the committee for the individual roles they had played over the past year and in turn those present expressed their gratitude to him for his efforts.
Tina has unfortunately had to resign from the committee for health reasons and thanks were passed on to her for her valued contribution. Moira Johnson was nominated to take Tina's place and this was also agreed unanimously. All other committee members were re-elected unopposed. A full list of committee members can be found under the 'Contacts' heading.
Richenda then gave a very full and detailed account of the recent trip to Herten involving six of our members. This was accompanied by a very interesting power point presentation. As always those who took part were welcomed and treated extremely well by our friends from Herten, enjoying a full and varied programme of visits.

We are again very grateful to Mark Green, Hon. We are very grateful to Dr Claudia Sternberg from Leeds university for her very informative and extremely interesting illustrated presentation on the internment camps for citizens of German-speaking countries in Wakefield and on the Isle of Man and for British citizens in Ruhleben in Germany during the 1st World War.
This evening was very much enjoyed by all present and prompted a lot of discussion. We hope that Dr Sternberg will visit us again in the future.

Thank you very much indeed to Christel Richter for coming all the way from Bradford at short notice, after Mark Green unfortunately had to withdraw, (Mark Green has rearranged his visit for 13th September 2019) to deliver a very well-researched, interesting and humorous presentation on amusing and unusual German place names such as 'Elend' (Misery) and 'Sorge' (Worry) with an explanation of their origins as well as other interesting facts about them. We are again grateful to Janet for providing an excellent translation into English.

Thank you very much indeed to Christel Richter for coming all the way from Bradford at short notice, after Mark Green unfortunately had to withdraw, (Mark Green has rearranged his visit for 13th September 2019) to deliver a very well-researched, interesting and humorous presentation on amusing and unusual German place names such as 'Elend' (Misery) and 'Sorge' (Worry) with an explanation of their origins as well as other interesting facts about them. We are again grateful to Janet for providing an excellent translation into English.

Another very enjoyable evening which began with a variety of 'belegte Brote' - different German cooked meats, pate and cheese with onions and gherkins - prepared by Tina, Janet, Monika, Andrew and Peter!
Tina then gave a detailed illustrated account of the recent visit made to Herten by her, Roy, Heather, Edith and Richenda to represent the society in the celebrations of 30 years of friendship between the people of our two towns, including a video of the sketch 'Aschenbroedel' (Cinderella), performed in German with immediate translation into English by various members of both societies.
Afterwards all members were presented with a gift of some coal, biscuits and a commemorative booklet courtesy of our German friends with their very best wishes.

We are very grateful to Mike Spencer for again making the long journey from Leeds accompanied by his wife, Ailsa, to deliver an extremely interesting and informative presentation on different aspects of Switzerland, based very much on his own travels and experiences when visiting his son, who works there.
After the talk members were presented with their part of the generous gifts brought across for us by our friends from Herten. Thank you to Richenda and Peter for organising this.

Another very enjoyable, fun-filled Christmas Extravaganza with performances from each of the users of the Ukrainian centre and visiting Ukrainian choristers from Stockport. This event was very well attended with the centre filled almost to capacity!
We were treated at the outset to a medley of Christmas carols from the Ukelele group. This was followed by a feast of different German and Ukrainian foods, including delicious vegetable soup made by Janet, very tasty potato salad and cucumber salad prepared by Tina and a variety of cakes with one (gluten free) freshly baked by Monika. The excellent guest Ukrainian choristers, who had travelled all the way from Stockport, took to the stage next with a wonderful selection of Ukrainian Christmas carols (joined for some by members of the Doncaster Ukrainian Centre, very smartly dressed in traditional costume). Next came the traditional, totally unrehearsed Christmas sketch by members of the Doncaster-Herten German Society (DHGS), ably assisted by willing volunteers from the audience - of whom James deserves a special mention for his performance as the 'Traumprinz (Prince of your Dreams)'. Janet's impeccable timing with her mobile was also noteworthy! Thank you very much to all who took part. After a short break came the performance of more carols by the extremely talented Gastrick Band.
I am sure that all users of this excellent facility are extremely grateful to Eugene and all members of the Ukrainian centre administration team for making the centre available to us and making us so welcome when we are there. We are very sad that Wendy is leaving the team. Enjoy your retirement, Wendy! We will miss seeing your friendly face behind the bar and chatting with you, but hope to see you occasionally at different events.

At the society AGM Peter outlined the activities of the past year and the events planned for the coming year, which was followed by some discussion.
Andrew presented the provisional, unaudited accounts, which show a small deficit over the year. He proposed that the annual subscription should remain at £20. This was agreed unanimously.
All officers and committee members were re-elected (A full list can be found on the 'CONTACTS' page).
The formal business was followed by cake and coffee and then a short presentation of some photographs - taken during the visit to Doncaster from 15th until 19th October of our Herten friends - with commentary from various members who had been involved. Thank you to Andrew for his photographs.

It was wonderful to meet up again with our friends from the 'Doncaster Freundeskreis' in Herten, whilst they were in Doncaster on Monday 15th October 2018 after spending a few days in the North East.
On Tuesday they visited the Kelham Island museum and the Cutlers' Hall in Sheffield,had a very tasty evening meal at the Turkuaz restaurant in Doncaster. On the Wednesday they were given guided tours of the Mansion House, Christchurch and the Cast theatre in Doncaster and then on their last day had a short tour of Hull on their return journey.
We really enjoyed socialising with them, including our evening get together at the Ukrainian Centre, attended by both the civic and elected mayors!
We very much look forward to seeing them all again!

Thank you again to the very talented musicians and vocalists of the Gastrick Band for putting together and performing so expertly -along with guest vocalist, Andrew - such a varied and interesting programme and creating a wonderful atmosphere for all present.
This first-class entertainment was accompanied by very tasty food, much of which was prepared by Peter, Monika and Tina. Thanks also to various other members of the society for their work in purchasing and serving the food and then cleaning and tidying up.

10 of our members travelled to Herten to visit our friends in Herten. We stayed in a very pleasant hotel in nearby Marl and had a full and varied programme of visits arranged by the 'Doncaster Freundeskreis' in the excellent company of so many of their members. A good attendance for a cold January evening. Mike gave a talk about Schneeberg in Saxony, the partner town of our twin town of Herten.

We were very pleased to welcome a new member, Renate, to this meeting.
After a presentation detailing the events of the past year, the accounts were presented and passed. It was agreed to keep the charge for membership at £20 for another year. With one minor amendment the minutes of the last AGM were passed as a correct record. After the formal business, there was general discussion regarding a possible Sprachcafe and Stammtisch. Rachel will send out a request for members to express a preference for a day and time for a Sprachcafe and Andrew agreed to visit a Stammtisch in the coming weeks.
Members then had the opportunity to see and enjoy the pertinent parts of a video, very professionally produced by Guenter, a member of the Doncaster Freundeskreis, about their recent visit to England and Wales.
We were very pleased to welcome a new member, Renate, to this meeting.

Another very enjoyable Oktoberfest with the excellent music of the Gastrick Band, accompanied on vocals by our own Andrew, and a variety of German food (both savoury and sweet) sourced and prepared by different members of the society. Thank you very much again to Peter, Monika, Janet, Richenda, Andrew and Rachel for all of their hard work, also to all members of the Gastrick Band for preparing and performing another rich, varied and entertaining programme of music for us to sing along to!

A very enjoyable evening to bid farewell to our German friends from Herten with excellent food prepared by Peter and Monika (with the help of their son), a rendition of "On Ilkley Moor Baht 'at" and the performance of a short piece of drama.

After making members aware of news received about the newly elected mayor of Herten, Mike screened two powerpoint presentations, giving information about the European Union with much additional detail provided by Andrew, who is clearly very knowledgeable on this subject. This prompted a lot of discussion.
Andrew then provided members with his own views on the EU. Many thanks to Andrew for preparing his very interesting presentation at such short notice!

Our games evening produced much fun and laughter with members playing board games such as 'Mensch aergere dich nicht!' (Ludo) and 'Yahtzee'.

Thank you again very much to Richenda for another extremely informative and interesting presentation in English and German - on this occasion on Berlin. There was then a short break for refreshment. Thank you to Monika and Janet (for baking) and Rachel (for buying) the extremely tasty cakes - Lecker! Thank you very much to Reverend Tom for his very interesting talk on German prisoners of War in Great Britain and the story of Ernst Siebels. Thank you also to his wife, Brigitte, for her short story "Friede", based on actual events.

Thank you very much to Richenda for a very well researched and extremely interesting presentation on the differences between the celebrations of Fasching and Karneval in various parts of Germany and Austria. This was followed by very tasty waffles with hot cherries and cream, prepared and served by Ann, Monika and Sandra (Thank you to all of them, also thanks to Linda G for making waffle mixture).
In addition there was traditional Karneval music, relevant clips from youtube showing costumes and processions and a short quiz.

A very well attended and enjoyable Christmas Extravaganza, with German and Ukrainian food and entertainment provided by the outstanding Ukrainian singers, the very talented DN2 vocalists, the exceptional members of the folk music group and the now customary unrehearsed performance of a German play ('It's all the cats fault!') by members of the Doncaster-Herten German Society with translation.
Thank you very much to all involved in the preparation and serving of the food and in providing the entertainment.

After discussion about some farmers' sayings about the month of May, e.g. "Im Mai ein warmer Regen bedeutet Fruechtesegen." and "Gruenen die Eichen vor dem Mai, zeigt's, dass der Sommer fruchtbar sei.", members showed off their collective knowledge about Germany and Herten with their responses to two quizzes.

An extremely well attended, entertaining and enjoyable Christmas extravaganza with an input from the various groups which are based at the Ukrainian Centre - music and song provided by the folk musicians and Gastrick Band, carols from the Ukrainian singers, a short (very amateur!) production of Snow White by members of the Doncaster-Herten German Society and German and Ukrainian food.

A wonderful evening of music to sing along to from Haydn Griffiths and the Armthorpe/Elmfield Band with a very tasty selection of German sausage, frikadelle, pea soup and salads followed by a variety of cake. Thank you very much to all involved in the planning, preparation and serving of the food. It was fantastic to welcome so many younger visitors!

Thank you very much to our friends from the folk music group, who created a wonderful atmosphere to finish off our evening after a sumptuous meal of Bratwurst, Frikadellen, Bockwurst, salads (thank you Tina for the Gurkensalat) and desserts (including a very tasty cake baked by Janet).
